Karen undertook her training in the UK and holds a First Class Honours Degree [BSc] in Herbal Medicine, a Diploma in Cranio-Sacral Therapy and Certificate in Core Process Psychotherapy and brings over 10 years of clinical experience to Hukanui Body Therapies.
She is a member of the New Zealand Association of Medical Herbalists [NZAMH] and Pacific Association of Cranio-Sacral Therapists [PACT] and is dedicated to continued professional development to enhance her knowledge and to offer the best care to her clients.
Karen has a deep understanding of her profession, having been course co-ordinator at the College of Cranio-Sacral Therapy and clinical skills supervisor at Westminster University, UK.
In London, she was fortunate to work at a hospital as part of a multidisciplinary team, supporting people with cancer and HIV. She has also worked with survivors of the London bombings and the Asian tsunami, so has a therapeutic grounding in working with people who have experienced trauma in their lives, which has enriched her clinical skills and appreciation of wholeness.
Karen's therapeutic interaction is to facilitate clients understanding of their individual experiences and work with the 'inner resources' of the client, with the appreciation that the body's natural expression is to seek health, rather than focusing on the dis-ease process itself.
Specialist interest in:
- Women's health
- Pregnancy, babies and children
- Emotional and stress related conditions
- Musculoskeletal complaints
- Supporting people with cancer
Karen works in collaboration with her clients to develop realistic 'Wellness Plans' and prescribes individual herbal prescriptions in conjunction with making dietary and lifestyle recommendations and where necessary, combines this with cranio-sacral therapy to optimise clients' health.
